Amygdala

The amygdala registers rapid emotional reactions and is implicated in depression, anxiety, and autism.

De Martino, B. et al. Amygdala damages eliminates monetary loss aversion. E-pub in advance, PNAS 8 Feb 2010.

Negative Thoughts

Research shows that brain changes indicative of depression can occur in nondepressed volunteers if they allow themselves to think sad or depressing thoughts. This result suggests that, at least in the initial stages, it is the negative thoughts and attitudes that unfavorable alter brain function, rather than the other way around.
